Some things I've learnt from years of rugby.
- Don't try kicking the cover off the ball. Have a measured run up and keep it smooth and free of stutter steps.
- Keep your head down and eyes on the spot you're gonna make contact with the ball.
- Placement of your planting foot before kicking is very important in terms of trajectory. Try to have it about 1/2 foot sideways and a little bit behind the ball so when you make contact your kicking leg is slightly in front of your body.
- When making contact with the ball, try to keep your posture mostly upright. A lot of people crunch up before kicking thinking it will get a little extra power, but really it's just more effort for less result.
- Use your whole body when kicking. Rotating your torso rather than crunching up results in more power with less effort. Also, make sure you follow through with your kicking leg rather than stabbing at the ball or stopping right after you kick.
And finally, keep practising.
